Anclote Island State Preserve & Dutchman Key

oblique aerial photograph of Anclote Key

In only 20 minutes after motoring up the main Gulf Harbors channel, you will see Anclote Island State Preserve, Dutchman Key and the North Anclote Sandbar.  This boasts a restored lighthouse originally built in 1887.

Take the USGS Virtual Field Trip of Anclote Island State Preserve Click HERE. To learn more about the lighthouse, click HERE.

North Anclote Sand Bar

This is where the majority of "locals" hang out. Picnic, search for sand dollars, swim or just soak in the Florida sunshine.  This is also home to many migrating birds and a sanctuary. Whatever your adventure, the days is yours to make it happen!

Durney Key

A favorite amongst locals, this spoil island is located just off the Pithlachascotee River Channel (just call it "Cotee River, we do!).  It is a popular place for BBQ's, snorkeling and just relaxing.  From Durney Key, you can also see many former commercial fish houses.

Three Rooker Bar

Contrary to popular belief, you may not purchase margaritas at this "bar".  This horseshoe shaped sand bar is one of the newest members of the barrier islands, having only emerged from the Gulf of Mexico less than a decade ago.

South Sand Bar

You'll get the best view of Anclote Island light house from here not to mention some of the best shelling around for sand dollars and starfish.*

*Florida state law limits removal of live species of marine life to two animals per day.  Dead ones - no limit!
